While our servicemen and women are fighting for our many freedoms in , the Champaign County Farm Bureau is doing their part to support our troops.  Marguerite Zahnd, and other Women’s Committee members, are sending their support, and words of thanks, to our nation’s troops to .

For months now Zahnd and many other area residents have been sewing neck warmers and shipping them to to friends or family members serving in our country’s military.  With temperatures soaring around 115 degrees, these neck coolers are an appreciated luxury to our soldiers.  Recently however, Zahnd and her friends have been sending another luxury to our troops -- cake.

How does one send a cake to , you might ask?  Marguerite Zahnd will tell you that it is actually quite simple- bake it in a jar.  Yes, “Cake in a Jar” has become popular with our troops overseas.  This is why Zahnd, and others on the Women’s Committee, have taken it upon themselves to bake and ship numerous cakes to in support of our American Soldiers, and they are asking for your help so that they might reach more local soldiers serving our country.

The Women’s Committee is asking for your donations so that they are able to continue to “bake for freedom”.  The committee is in need of regular or wide-mouthed, pint-sized canning jars and lids for their cakes.  While the cost of baking the cakes is minimal, the Women’s Committee admits that the cost of shipping their product to is the largest roadblock to the program.  “It takes nearly $10 to ship a box to , but it is a small price to pay for the work our men and women are doing”, said Zahnd.

In a typical shipping, Zahnd will package five jars of cake, each wrapped with a neck cooler and a local newspaper or magazine for the soldiers to enjoy.  Throw in a few plastic forks and you know that our men and women in uniform are able to enjoy a few moments away from the reality that is .  For Marguerite Zahnd and the Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, that is the most important reason to bake; to let our soldiers know that we support them.
